How to care for your classic car
If you’re new to the world of classic cars, you’re in for not only an exciting hobby but also a rewarding experience filled with cool cars, fantastic events, and wonderful people. As with any hobby, it does take some work and upkeep. These are our top tips for caring for your classic vehicle (aka your baby!)
To protect your car from the elements when it’s not in use, you’ll want to store it indoors. Keep in mind that in order to avoid corrosion and mold, storing your vehicle in a damp-free space is key. Plus, if you’re storing your car for an extended period of time, we recommend investing in a heater or dehumidifier to ensure the space stays dry… and mold stays out.
Although storing your classic car is important, there is no fun in having it if you can’t show it off, right? Taking it for a cruise every now and then will not only make you look cool but will also keep your car running smoothly and effectively. Make sure to keep your ears open for any odd sounds such as grinding or squealing, as these noises may indicate internal issues.
Cleanliness is imperative when it comes to classic car care. We recommend using a mild soap when washing it, waxing it periodically, and even checking and hosing down the undercarriage after every drive. This will clear your car of any road dirt or salt.
Just like any car, classic or not, oil levels are of utmost importance. If you don’t want to destroy your motor (and we hope you don’t!) regular oil and oil filter changes will keep your classic car running smoothly. Speaking of fluids, it is also important to regularly check your engine’s coolant and antifreeze.
We’ll be honest with you… owning and upkeeping a classic car isn’t a cheap hobby. You’ll want to properly budget for cleaning supplies, rare parts that may be hard to come by, tune-ups, and even registration fees for classic car shows.
